About me

Kia ora! I am Willem Pennings. I’m 21 years old and was born in New Zealand, but I have lived in the Netherlands for well over a decade now. I study Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (‘TU/e’). I use this website as a means to publish information about my personal projects and life. The website has existed since 2012 and has seen a steady growth of content and visitors ever since. Topics include DIY (do-it-yourself), aerospace, electronics, mechanics and travelling, to name just a few!

At the age of 9, I started tinkering with simple electronics. Being very impressed with the fact that I could toggle a bulb with the press of a button, my box of components quickly became too small. I discovered rocketry at the age of 11 and quickly assembled my first rocket and launch platform. For me, launching a plastic bottle over the roof of our house was equivalent to putting a man on the moon…

Much has changed. My latest projects are powered by Arduino (Atmel) and Raspberry Pi microcontrollers. All machines and projects are designed and engineered using CAD (computer-aided design) tools such as Siemens NX and AutoCAD. My latest water rocket design consists of a carbon fiber composite body. It features a fully automatic parachute recovery system, which safely brings back the rocket from its 150 meter apogee. I have showcased my candy sorting machine in every form of media (inter)nationally. I keep developing myself and my skills to achieve ambitious goals.

This website is meant for anyone who is interested in the topics listed above, or just wants to stay updated on my progress and life. I hope to inspire some by encouraging them to build their own clocks, sorting machines, rockets and the like. I hope to entertain others using the photos and videos that are available. Lastly, I hope that you enjoyed reading this piece and will continue enjoying my content.
